What Are Chemical Peels?
A chemical peel is a treatment used to improve the appearance of skin on the face. Dr. Covici applies a non-toxic chemical called trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to the skin, which causes the skin to exfoliate and peel, revealing a newer, regenerated layer of more youthful looking skin. TCA chemical peels are used to reduce brown spots, age spots, and fine lines, and to improve the appearance and texture of damaged skin.
How Chemical Peels Work
TCA peels remove layers of skin at different levels. Light peels remove the top layer of damaged or dead skin, while medium and deep peels remove additional layers of skin. Most plastic surgeons recommend patients use light peels to avoid the risk of complications associated with deeper peels, like scarring or uneven pigmentation. When performed in a series of two or three, many patients experience great results with light chemical peels.
Chemical peels are most commonly used to treat skin on the face, but they can also target problem areas on the neck, chest, back, arms, and legs. For some patients, peels are an excellent alternative to lasers for improving the texture and appearance of skin. But when used on non-facial areas of the body, peels offer less predictable results; only you and Dr. Covici can decide if a TCA chemical peel is right for you.
